Starting August 1, 2026, purchasing a "Specified Semi-Automatic Firearm" in Colorado requires completing a state-approved safety course first. This generally includes:
- Semi-automatic rifles with detachable magazines (AR-15, AR-10, AK-style, and other modern sporting rifles)
- Semi-automatic shotguns with detachable magazines
- Gas-operated semi-automatic handguns with detachable magazines
Already own one? The law does not require a course to keep firearms you already own — only to purchase or receive new ones. A concealed-carry permit class does not satisfy this requirement.
The 5-step process
- Register with Colorado Parks & Wildlife (free)Create your profile in the Colorado Firearms Safety System at coloradofss.com. CPW verifies your hunter-education status and determines whether you need the 4-hour or 12-hour course. Save your FSS Application ID — you'll need it to register with us.
- Complete a name-based background checkUse an approved vendor. MyTruSeal is currently one of the least expensive options at about $30.
- Get your Sheriff's Office eligibility cardApply with your county sheriff's office. Processing fees vary by county — roughly $52–$177 depending on where you live.
- Take the course and passAttend the in-person course and score 90% or better on the written exam and the hands-on live-fire practical.
- Purchase your firearmOnce you pass, you're eligible to purchase or receive a regulated firearm for five years.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need this to keep the guns I already own?
No. The requirement applies to purchasing or receiving a specified semi-automatic firearm on or after August 1, 2026.
Does my concealed-carry class count?
No. Prior concealed-carry training does not substitute for the SB25-003 course.
Can I take the class online?
No. The course must be completed in person and includes a live-fire practical.
How long is my certification good for?
Five years from course completion.
What should I bring to class?
A government-issued photo ID, your sheriff eligibility card, and eye and ear protection. We'll confirm any additional items when you register.
